A convicted man
Killed six including a child
Raped a woman
And beaten her 'til she died

His sentence arrived
The payment for all his sins
Before the electricity end his life
He sincerely asked God's forgiveness with teary eyes.

Will God listen to him?

A rich man
End up dying on a sidewalk with nothing
All his life
He gave the needy his everything

On his pocket, there's a note
"Please donate my vital parts
to those who needs it to prolong their lives."
He's an agnostic.

Will God spare his soul?

Draw your gun
Pull the trigger, hit the target
Buy more token, try another game
Until it's almost gone

Buy and watch DVD movies
The pirated one
Better if that 24-in-1
Until it's almost gone

Collect matchsticks
As many as you can
Rebuild the World Trade Center
Until it's almost gone

Try PS2 games
The toughest one
Save it in just one day
Until it's almost gone

Pick a guitar
And perfect a piece
Try Canon or Happy Birthday
Until it's almost gone

Solve an equation
Try a+b=c, if that's too easy
Then solve the Theory of Relativity
Until it's almost gone

Watch animé series
The longest one
I recommend Rurouni Kenshin
Until it's almost gone

Slit your wrist
Try not to die
Drink your blood, laugh hard
Until it's almost gone

Or stay in your room
Lie in your bed
But don't sleep or even blink
Until it's almost gone

And finally, don't take my advice, it's useless
I tried all of them and I failed
It's still there
She's still there.

Tumatawa sa sobrang saya
Tila walang katapusang ligaya

…mahalin.

Why wait
If it will take eternity
Why follow
If you will move away like a rainbow

Why smile
And pretend to be happy
Why cry
If tears will not lessen the agony

Why dream
And wake up in scream
Why believe
And end up deceived

Why live
If every second alone is a suicide
Why die
If heaven is just a lie

Why ask
If your answer is just another question
Why answer
If I’m not asking even some stupid question

Why write
If you will never read it
Why read
If this writer no longer exists.

Scenario 1:
A loving couple
Married twenty-nine years
Childless
Deaf God, unanswered prayers.

They died last year
No one to shed a single drop of tear.

A young girl
Eighteen years of age
Left alone
Unwanted pregnancy

Last week, she decided
Unborn child in a jar with liquid.

Scenario 2:
A bald little girl
Fighting cancer for three years
Pain is an understatement
Deaf God in her endless screams.

She departed yesterday
She’s gone along with her family’s wealth.

A stupid little boy
Dreamed to become a lawyer
His mother insists a Mathematician
His father wants an Engineer.

This morning, Algebra exam failed
With his father’s gun, pointblank to his head.

Scenario 3:
A lovely woman
Beaten and raped by a gang.
Her beauty is not just an adjective
Their death is not enough punishment.

An hour ago, a message arrived
Despite courage and prayers, she did not survive.

A loner man
Wrote this poem to kill the time
A trying hard sick poet
Can’t endure the agony of her death.

Now he decided
To be one of his poem’s character
His masterpiece’s player.

Thanks to Somnus
His kingdom brings hope
His prayer heals faith
For those who praised and followed me

Thanks to the creator of dreams
His masterpiece’s my only weapon and shield
His creation’s my only way
To touch your face, my only bitter way

Thanks to the night
To its fascinating darkness
To its never-ending questions
Yet, I can find the answers though all I can see is your face

Thanks to the poem
For I can express till the last strand of my feelings
For I can create imaginary drops of tears
A virtual cry to lessen my agony

Thanks to the rain
For its drops that remind me of tears
For its coldness that brings back the meaning of being alone
The feelings forever frozen in frame.

Flowers dried
Tryst forgotten
Lovers bid goodbye

Beauty vanished

Reality punished
Dreams faded.

Blood runs cold
Tears runs dry
Faith gets old
When will I die?

they rose from the end of the battle
the battle of its kind, of same goal
bloodless war, thousand spectators
endless screams, calling their names.

‘wag kang matakot ‘di mo ba alam nandito lang ako sa iyong tabi,
    ‘di kita pababayaan kailanman…

four heroes with a mission
to save the earth from evil forces
with their ultraelectromagnetic powers
and their great talent and skills.

he is the backman, the beatle, the hyperactive
has the most weapon among them
with a stick as a trigger,
every enemy will perish in just one beat.

kung may problema ka, magsuot ng maskara
takpan ang yong mata, buong mundo’y mag-iiba…

he is the leftman, low note specialist, the energetic
unlike the other three, his hair never evolve,
with his four huge strings as his punisher,
bad creatures will pop their brains out of its shell

    maselang bahaghari, sa aking isipan
‘wag kang mabahala, ‘di kita malilimutan…

he is the rightman, feedback master, the electric
the producer of noise, the consumer of cigarette.
the killing machine is his strings and hi-tech gadget
every unwanted elements will surely eliminated.

o, d’yos ko, ano ba naman ito,
‘di ba t@ng-ina, nagmukha akong tanga…

he is the frontman, vox expert, the fantastic
the leader of the force, the mastermind of the plan
with the weapon as his rightman, but the most powerful one
in addition to his voice, evil invaders will vanish together with their clan.

    pinilit kong iahon ka,
    ngunit ayaw mo namang sumama…

while those four beatles busy protecting the universe,
our heroes are here guarding the earth
fighting till the end, saving us till the last drop of their sweat,
till the last strand of their breath.

(but we, the people, are the first to forget their bravery…)

but like all heroes, they’re gone
like the quietude of poe and lennon
like the death of jesus and superman
after more than a decade of saving the planet, they left us and gone.

but…

they’re back with their own evil-killer league
with the same mission, with their own respective powers
they’re still protecting us, but not as powerful as it was
they’re still there, and humanities could barely remember.

Dance as if no one is watching
Sing like no one is listening
Run that seems everyone is chasing
Fly like you’re in Neverland
Cry like you have an infinite tears
Laugh like nobody cares
Live and lie that you are satisfied
Wait as if someone will come back

…and dream as if it will ever come true.

I want to look at you
But it seems you always avoid my stares
So I just sit here, rather watching the rain
How can I ever see you between the raindrops and tears.

I want to be near you
But seems you move farther away the closer I got.
So I just sit here, watching your face and enjoying the distance between us
How can ever I afford to see you getting tired of running.

I want to touch you
But seems you turned into gold everytime I try
So I just stand here, embracing the warmness and smell of your skin
How can I ever feel the warmth of your skin if I let you turn into a precious cold gold.

I want to embrace you
But seems you crumpled like a forgotten letter everytime I try
So I just walk, with you on my side, pleased with the softness of your hand.
How can I ever forgive myself if I let you break down in spite of my caring arms.

I long to kiss you
But seems you drift away and drown the moment I touch your lips
So I rather close my eyes whispering those words eloquently while you’re a prisoner of my arms.
How can I ever let you drown and die just for your precious kiss.

I want to be with you, forever
But it seems forever, like infinity, has its own end.
So I just kissed you for the first and last time,
Embrace that never wants to break,
Touch that I will never feel again,
The distance that’s now even farther,
And the last glimpse at your fading silhouette suddenly engulfed by a cruel rain.

At nagising na ang diwa
ng malupit na ulap
Ngunit di mo pa rin nakikita
ang saya ng liwanag.

At naglaho na lahat
ng masamang panginip
Ngunit pinipili mo pa ring
humiga at pumikit.

At sisimulan ko na
ang bagong umaga,
Ngunit para sa’yo
magdamag pa ring malaya.

At pumatak na ang luha
ng huling paghihirap,
Ngunit mas ninais mong
magtapon lang ng isang sulyap.

At bumangon ako’t

aninong nag-iisa, pilit naninigarilyo

sigarilyong halatang, labi’y madalang lapatan.

habang…
…buhay.

marahan kang nilisan.
mapait mong tinitigan.
masakit mang ika’y iwanan
sa ngayon……. kailangan.

ang matagal na tinitigan sa kawalan
kapag andon na at nalaman….
na wala ng pag-asang panalangin ay dinggin.
kahit mag-uumaga na, babalikan kita at aakayin

sa kanto, sa kalsada
tahimik, mapayapa, walang abala

He was there!
Static and endless gaze
He didn’t care
Deep and unanswerable maze

All alone
Engraving his own name on a tombstone
His epitaph
Digging his own grave, all alone

Here’s another
Drop of seconds in the mud
Light slowly faded
He had nothing, no one he had

Can’t hear anything
Silence in the middle of nowhere
Only a threnody
Sorrowful, lonely and eerie

The serpentine
Swallowed his world in his very hand
Abyss of darkness
And the power infinite sadness

AB OVO

I am here, in this place where, as everybody says, God resides. I saw her exchanging vows eloquently with the man that made her tummy bulge. I’m not much into dresses, but I must admit that I do appreciate her in that elegant long white gown. She is much more beautiful now, considering her bloated belly. I’m not invited by anyone from either party but I prefer not to miss this occasion (how masochistic of me) in fulfillment of a promise I made.

LIBERI FATALI

So I settled myself behind, above on the balcony where once I played guitar and sang praises with the choir. I was contended having to watch the rather unpleasant scenario for me with Mang Roland, the church organist, from afar while sitting in this century old wooden bench just behind the metal railing. All other three wooden benches which we once used to occupy during Saturday choir practices are now empty and silently gathering dust. I have my own seat that time as well as Mang Roland. I can remember them clearly, the group and the heavenly melody that dominated the entire church.

But now, the choir was gone, only three of us were left here. Mang Roland (I don’t know his real name; I used to call him that way because it is the name of the model of his organ) who is still the organist of this church, the only survivor. She, in that altar, and me, here far behind.

Way back then, we were a fourteen-man choir; she, being one of the sopranos, was the only reason why I joined the group; a reason unknown to everybody. I am not that religious to sing praises, in fact, the concept of God always bothers me. But I believe in Jesus Christ, like the way I believe in David Blaine. Blasphemy? Well, maybe, but I believe that all great truths begin as blasphemies.

That time, Mang Roland convinced me to play the organ. He said that I will replace him someday when he died. I replied with the same joke that I will go ahead of him; my way of saying that I really can’t play organ. The guitar is my forte, ironic isn’t? Maybe I just appreciated the advantages of guitar, I can play it anywhere even in the remotest places where electricity doesn’t exist. Mang Roland said that I should play harmonica instead, then everybody laughed.

UTSUKUSHII TENSHI

One time, I was making my way down from the bell tower after ringing the twelve o’clock afternoon call, I saw her sitting on this chair where I am now. She was alone and early, considering that our practice is 1:00pm. I stopped midway the stairs and sat at the step watching her. She had her earphone stuck, humming some (at first) indecipherable tune and trying desperately to match her hum with my guitar which I left there a while ago.

I just watched her while her eyes were closed. The afternoon sun rays which passed through the stained glass window somehow generated a very magnificent effect on her. Like an angel sent from heaven through a divine portal. How I wish I had a camera that time so that I could catch an enigmatic portrait of her.

When she opened her eyes and saw me, she quickly laid my guitar where it was before and pretended (though obviously shown) that she wasn’t doing anything. I just smiled and stepped down and took my position, still no word from both of us. She is staring at the huge crucifix at the altar but I know she is waiting for my verdict from the corner of her eyes.

HITOKIRI BATTOUSAI

I slowly picked my guitar then played the notes of her humming almost perfectly, that’s my only talent I guess. She looked at me and smiled then said sorry, she realized that I was watching her for so long that I could memorize everything.

“The only possibility of forgiving you is giving me the title of this piece”, said I

She quickly replied “Days to Remember”

I just nodded while plucking the piece.

“It’s one of the soundtracks of Rurouni Kenshin, commonly known as Samurai X, are you familiar with that animé”? she asked excitedly. She suddenly became talkative, giving me a hint that she’s an animaniac.

“Yeah, I know that, but I’m unable to watch all the episodes”, I lied just to give her a positive reply.

“Really! That’s much better, at least I discovered that I’m not alone”, she said with the sigh of relief, “Would you like to hear the original version of that instrumental piece?” She continued offering her player’s earphone, explaining that the original piece is composed of several accompaniments.

“I loved to but I prefer not to.” I replied cautiously, I don’t want to upset her.

“Why?”

“It is your hum that I want to recall every time I am playing this piece.” I replied without a single glimpse.

The silence breaks after a minute or two.

“Uhmm, why don’t you try it on piano,” she said nodding at the organ Mang Roland set up an hour ago.

I could have said that my forte is guitar, but it is she, not Mang Roland is telling me to try organ.

“Some other time I will, I promise, the time that you hear this piece on organ here at this church, it is me”, I said accepting her request.

She just smiled, agreeing. She knew that Mang Roland had no single idea about Samurai X’s theme, so it is me and only me who could play the tune. I handed her a piece of paper with an enhanced tablature of Days to Remember that I jotted down from the very start of our conversation.

“Just follow it, I’m sure you can play the piece,” I guaranteed her. I know that she can easily understand guitar tab. I just instructed her on what to do at the complicated part of the chorus.

Other choir member, as well as Mang Roland, arrived one by one before she could extend her thanks. Our conversation ended at the beginning of the practice.

MARIA

“Why should I?”

“Why should you not?” she blurted out, referring to our long time discussion about religion.

“Because I have reasons not to and can’t find reasons to.” I snapped back. Yes, we’re in argument, but we never quarreled.

“Why don’t you JUST believe in Him just like others? She said emphasizing the “just”.

“If I’m going to consider your ‘just’ proposal, then I must still believe that this world is flat and everything in outer space revolves around us.” I replied as carefully as I can. I can’t afford hurting her. How I wish she got my point so as to end that kind of subject.

“What is He to you?” She started again.

“Please forgive my answer, but as opposed to my long time belief that wheel is the greatest invention of man, I think He really is the ultimate creation of mankind, that’s all. I just…”

“What if you’re wrong?” she cut me short.

“So?” I replied rashly.

“So?!” she finally ignited, I imagined her in exaggeration, those visible forehead vein that are about to explode, those oversized head and teeth indicating rage and frustration and those very huge single drop of sweat like in the animé stories that she love to tell me. She is expecting much further and deeper explanation, and I gave it to her.

“I mean, so what if I’m wrong. If there’s really some Divine Entity up there watching us anytime, anywhere, if really God does exists, that’s fine with me. I’m wrong then, I can live with that…”

“So, you are holding your grip on the wrong belief”, she asked rather hypothetically, ceasing my explanations’ momentum.

“In this planet, the fraction of my kind is very negligible as compared to those who believe in Him”, I continued ignoring her hypothesis, “so if I’m wrong, it doesn’t make any sense, it doesn’t make any hard impact on mankind’s belief. Agree?”

She just nodded in forced agreement.

“You know, you shouldn’t bother by my being wrong in this issue. The question IS what if I’m right. That large fraction of people in this sphere must receive your hypothesis on wrong belief.”

She suddenly turned silent, staring at that huge crucifix for a long time, I guess I gained some points that time. Me, on the other hand, got my guitar and adjust the machinehead to get the right drop of the tune, while snatching a glimpse of her. The enigma, the stained glass and that gentle breeze that caresses her hair. I remember that hair, that’s the first and last time I saw them untied.

“Then why are you here?” she asked slowly after a long pause without looking. She just executed the Hiten Mitsuruyi Ryu discreetly. Along the course of our conversation, it never crossed to my mind the possibility of that question. I know what she means. The question punched that I snapped Maria’s thinnest string. It whipped my right arm and caused it to bleed though not so profusely. That’s the very first time I snapped a string in history.

I recall everything about her, the answer for her question, my only reason for being here. I wanted to tell her that that time. But then again, ironically the choir members came and ended our unusual conversation. I didn’t practice that time, I reasoned that I have to buy strings for Maria, that’s my guitars’ name.

SHE

She has the simplest name yet often misspelled. I feel strange just saying her name. Some angle of her face reminds me of Jeon Ji-Hyun. She is just a typical senior lass but more masculine in gesture than me, but no question about her gender, in fact those who question will unwittingly lead themselves into an argument. How I hate arguments especially when she’s on the other side. She reasoned that she just wanted to defy the norms of being a girl. About three-fourths of the words in our conversation is coming from me but she always got the highest point. She got senses, great ideas and opinions.

She’s the most silent in the choir, the only time that she releases a voice is of course when she sings praises and when the topic in the conversation is that Japanese cartoons. In terms of animé, she’s an authority and I have to deal with it. One time I went to Lucena just to buy the complete episodes of Samurai X. I watched it for two days (less than 100 episodes, average of 25 minutes each!) but intentionally skipped the last four episodes. Reason: to have something to ask her that surely will ignite a great conversation. How pathetic of me.

Usually, after the three hour practice, she is contended sitting on the concrete circular bench in front of the church, doing nothing, maybe calculating the vertical velocity of the sun until it is completely engulfed by the inevitable power of darkness. She seems fascinated with darkness and likes being alone. It seems nobody can breach her domain. Being called autistic is a compliment for her (and for me). In comparison with her weekly routine, I am contended watching her from the bell tower with Maria. How ironic it is that I always see her but we actually live in different worlds.

She never talked about her family, the only thing I found out is that she’s a sole child and living with her foster mother. Her father’s whereabouts: unknown.

ONE THIRD NO JUNJOU NA KANJOU

My reminiscing was suddenly interrupted by the heavy footstep of two sacristans climbing hurriedly into the bell tower to ring the announcement of the couple who are about to leave the altar. That’s when I realized that the ceremony is almost over.

I moved and settled myself in Mang Roland’s place who just left to congratulate the newlywed, especially she who once became his choirmate. Me, on the other hand didn’t bother, no matter how masochistic I am.

I just stared at the black and white architecture of the keyboard. From my throne, I could barely see her in spite of the crowd around her extending their congratulations. She’s very happy, I can assume that.

I tipped my finger on the keyboard to produce the first note, then the second and so on. I completed the first verse in an instant. She is now motionless down there, ignoring the crowd, looking at my direction with amazement without seeing me. Then her teardrops fell, knowing that I’m the one who’s playing. Mang Roland on the other hand was puzzled.

I didn’t break any promise to her. That when she got married, I’m there, only that, I’m no groom.

AU REVOIR

Eight years ago she went to Illinois with her father to reside there. Her father, a Filipino-American, fetched her a year after her adoptive mother died. That’s the first time she met her father. I don’t know how they found out each other.

She didn’t leave any contact info. She didn’t even bid goodbye. Before she left, she returned Maria to me, she borrowed it to fulfill her frustration, to play Days to Remember. And she did it well. She even played it before me, and I can’t believe that she executed each note better than me.

Her departure was the saddest point of my life that I quit choir. Like a domino effect, one left the choir after another until only the organist was left. The choir was gone, but I see Mang Roland everyday and sometimes we play together during mass, but most of my time I spent at bell tower with Maria and that memorable theme, I did it almost everyday for one and a half years.

Until that day. The day that she became the girl from yesterday. The end of everything. October 8, 2004, 12:06 pm. After playing the piece, I step out of the bell tower with Maria.

Eyes closed. No turning back. Turning back is not an option. My head is filled with her memory and her melody is so in my heart, even after touch down.

SEMPER FIDELIS

When I opened my eyes, I saw my horrible physique, my corpse in blood. Along with my beloved Maria, which is now nothing but a crumpled piece of wood and strings. I moved over Maria and squatted beside it when I noticed something inside its broken body. A piece of paper, the one with tablature I wrote for her before. Then a mild wind caused it to flip. On the other side, there’s a note in her own handwriting. Some of it read:

“Pls. be at my wedding someday, I want you to be my groom… Pls. wait for me.” Then those three cliché words before her sign.

The note also states her address and phone number in West.

Just a while ago, I am living in the thought that dreaming the impossible is more painful, in fact the most painful form of suicide. But then, I realized that there’s a superlative form of that. Closing the door and locking it permanently with my booth hands without seeing someone is out there waiting, or if ever that I saw her, didn’t even dare to ask some stupid questions like: if she wants to go inside or she wants me to accompany her outside.

How cruel it is to live in drama and die in a comedy.

I left the place regretting just before the crowd feasting my body got thick.

EPILOGUE

After hearing the first five notes, I was convinced that he’s there. I almost didn’t pay attention to Mang Roland, our former choirs’ organist, who are holding my hand and expressing his congratulations.

I looked up to the balcony where we once spend hours of sharing ideas, of telling animé stories, but although I know that I will never see him I feel very frustrated. I became motionless, not a word but with a smile, tears came out unknowingly as the instrumental goes. I’m happy, I know that, not only because it’s my wedding day, but because he’s there performing his promise. Every person around me is puzzled, especially Mang Roland and my groom.

We went out the church along with the announcement from the bell tower. I stopped at the very front of the church where the path of his memory ended. Or should I say he ended for the reason that I don’t know. I scanned the environment, noticed that few changes taken place. My favorite spot is still there, where I spent most of the time watching the infinite horizon and waiting for him to come down from the bell tower rather than watching me. But as always, my desideratum fades along with the vanishing sun. How ironic it is that I always see him but we actually live in different worlds.

I don’t know if he proved his theory about love before he died, that if God is directly proportional to love, then love indeed is just a manipulation of human mind through pure chemical reaction due to evolution. The way he explained it reminds me of those head cracking algebraic equations with lots of abc’s and xyz’s enclosed in a parenthesis. It’s just a composition of mathematics, Discovery Channel and logic, he added.

But he doesn’t completely disbelieve the existence of love, he just defended that it fades and expires no matter what because it is being ‘developed’. Like universe, no matter how huge and vast it is, time will come that it will all collapse into a negligible size.

“How dare you to compare love with that infinite universe?!” I remember exactly how I exclaimed that time.

“Okay then, explain what that damn thing is.” He replied softly referring love as that ‘damn thing’.

“Well, you know it is something that really can’t be explained or rather I say I can’t explain.” I said hardly reaping some better thoughts.

“Then, you answered your query. So I am with the explanation of the universe’s origin or whatever in it. All I have is nothing but theory” he said. I don’t know if he really mean it or he just want to pacify my painful collection of the pieces of my shattered pride. He always got me with those weird but great ideas.

Few months from now, I’m going to give birth to a child which I decided to name after him regardless of gender. I just smiled when I remember how he annoyed by his own name for its being unisex.

I looked up the tower, hoping to see the machinehead of his guitar to no avail. Then I finally said, “Ciao”.

Your portrait on a crumpled paper
Lying on my side
Sitting, staring blankly at the wall
You’re here, you are here!

Eight years, long years of waiting
And the stubborn insomnia surrendered
Now that you’re here, what must I feel?
Do I have to cry, shout or do I have to laugh?

Before, you’re about 15, 000 miles away
But when I saw you yesterday
Of course, I feel the distance changed
It became a million light years.

Your pedestal is even higher now
I’m still on the ground looking up
Then I slowly lowered my head
Amidst of darkness, teardrops fell…

…t@ng#$n@’ bumalik ka pa!!!!

::Ab Ovo

Eureka! I said to myself.

After several unsuccessful attempts to get one of those sodas in this century-old vending machine, I finally got my ice cold Sprite. I lift the lever slowly. But amidst the noise of the oxygen reacting with the carbonated drink and the deafening echo of the footsteps around, I can barely hear her sobs.

I began to search my environment, then as my frustration began to boil, I saw her. Sitting alone on a bench along the seemingly endless corridor of the town’s biggest hospital. Covering her face with her both hands, crying carelessly that anyone can feel the loneliness in her heart. But no one knows the reason for her tears except her and probably me.

After my second kiss to my beloved softdrinks in can, I moved over her. I sat on her right side without looking at her pitiful physique. She, as I knew it, didn’t give any damn to look at me. She’s in abyss.

Although annoyed by her crying, I know how to manipulate my patience, I just enjoyed the last drop of my Sprite. I threw the can in to the garbage basket at the opposite side of the corridor just in front of us. Unfortunately I missed. “This is not a lucky day,” I mumbled.

The can came tumbling down the floor making those disturbing thin sound. I waited a second or two then scanned the surroundings to find any penetrating look from people around who are disturbed by the noise and her cry, much less by our mere presence. Luckily not much of them care.

I looked at her but she seems not bother by my ice breaker, she still had her hand stuck in her face. I just studied her. Looking at this barefoot poor little lass clad in blood-stained faded jeans, scarred and crimson yellow tops, one could tell that she’s been in one bloody experience. Her hands, also bloody and bruised. Her rosy face is covered by her long hair.

Then I took courage to utter a query. I asked her.

“How did you die?”

My ice breaker is much more effective now; she abruptly stopped crying then slowly lowered her hands then looked at me. Although wearing those watered eyes, she’s one of the finest women I’ve ever met. Some dried blood almost covered her rosy cheeks and pale lips. But I know behind her mask of blood, she’s beautiful.

Puzzled by my question, she looked at me as if saying “pardons me?”

“Excuse me mister?!” she said with her trembling voice.

I just smiled and look away. Trying to find my frustrated softdrinks can.

“I assume you’re dead for less than two hours now” I replied slowly with touch of sadness.

“What had happened to you?”

“Please mister, I don’t know if you’re crazy or something, but I’m in the middle of fear and agony, please do respect me.” She replied quite loud but careful.

::Six Sense

Since I was six, I am living in two conjoining worlds: the living and the dead. The first time I saw ghosts, I nearly joined them. I’ve been confined in the hospital for three weeks. But after sometime, my immune system worked well.

I was used to it, I always contend. I just treat those dead as living and the living dead to make these worlds as one. I don’t know if the ability to see and communicate with someone in the third dimension is a gift or a curse.

But my mother always had an explanation to everything. She told me to analyze a simple kitchen knife, she said that if I used it to cause somebody to die, it’s bad of course, but if I use it to slice breads or carve wood into something nice, it is really a good kitchen utensil. “It depends on how one uses it,” she added. If I used my ability for the good, it’s a gift; otherwise it’s a curse that I would be dealing with for my life.

Everything has its own reason. Right after a person died they don’t know that they’re dead and that’s my ultimate duty: to tell them and make them accept the reality.

“I am sorry miss, but don’t you remember why you’re here. Try to recall and please tell me.” I pleaded looking at her watery eyes.

She suddenly turned silent, staring blankly at the peeling paint at the wall. Thinking. I just waited or just got no reason to utter a word. The night is getting older and the wall clock states that it was one in the morning and the people including the ghosts walking hurriedly in front of us gradually got thinner and thinner. Much more silence now.

After that long reminiscing and pondering, she moved and began to cry again. Her sobs are much louder now and it’s breaking my time with silence.

“Well, I think that’s alright, you must accept it whether you like it or not, there’s nothing we can do.” I said trying desperately to calm her down but it’s no good. I just let her cry; it’s a good outlet after all.

She stopped, catching her breath and began her tragic story.

::The Beginning Of Her Last Story

Three hours earlier she and her younger brother were on their way home from her graduation party. She just got her bachelor’s degree in Communication. Her brother fetched her that night because it was already late. After a sharp turn just three blocks away from their home, a speeding red Mitsubishi pick-up smashed their poor tiny RAV4. She can’t recall what happened next.

“All I can remember then is we brought my brother here, I’m very worried about him.” She said between sobs. I just listened eagerly.

“I don’t care if I’m dead, I just want to know what happened to my brother, know that he’s okay.” She continued looking at me almost pleading.

“Okay, miss please calm down,” I replied “I will get some information about your brother, wait here, is that OK?” I continued while standing. She just nodded. I’m gone before she could deliver her thanks.

I search every possible source of information, from emergency room to operating room. Ironically no one can give any answers to my questions, they kept on ignoring me so I just listened, that’s all I can do. I found out that one of the couple in the other car also died.

At the operating room, her brother had just come out. I followed until we arrived at his recovery room where bunch of relatives are already waiting. A couple, most probably her parents, was still in shock with what had happened. They lost their precious daughter and their son is full of bandage, several bone fracture was all he got. “He is in a stable condition,” the doctor declared. I came to think that it was really a hard impact between the two vehicles.

After watching the unpleasant scenario, I decided to return to the girl. I walked along the corridor feeling strange, I can’t hear my footstep or the echo of it. I’m just very tired I thought.

She’s still there, waiting patiently. She’s even lovelier now. Her eyes followed me until I laid myself on her side. She didn’t uttered a word, she wanted me to talk first.

“I have one good news and one bad,” I started looking at her amusing eyes “which one you want to hear first?” she suddenly frowned as if saying “please go on because every seconds that passes, my fear grows.”

“Ok, ok I’ll decide” I said trying to bring back her lovely face. “The good news is your brother is in a stable condition, although suffering from some fractures but I heard that it’s only a minor injury, he’s still lucky.

After hearing what I’ve said, I noticed the very first smile that broke into her face. How lovely.

“Really?! Well that’s really good news. What’s the bad news, then?” she asked.

Without much care or eloquence I just said, “You’re dead.” The way I said it reminds me of how a favored actor told the villain of what he is now after firing his last bullet.

“Ow, I don’t care, I’m just worried ‘bout my parents, surely they’re so sad” said she slowly dropping her head.

“Yup, In fact they’re crying and still shocked when I saw them but I’m sure they can accept what had happened,” I continued now with less candid. “Has reality already sank in you that you are already dead? What had happened to you?” I unwittingly asked her as if being dead is a thing that can be easily be accepted.

“Of course,” she said with that great smile again “there’s no more I can do but to accept the reality right?”

“That’s right,” I responded with glee as if happy with her death.

::Au Revoir

She did not stayed longer, she said her thanks then bid goodbye. She asked me if I wanted to walk with her to the end of the hallway but I refused. Maybe that’s one of the greatest thing I’ve ever done, to decline from the irresistible invitation of a lovely woman.

“I’m tired,” I said as an alibi. She said okay then flash her last wave. I just watched her walking into the end of the corridor until her lovely physique was engulfed by blinding lights. She was gone. My mission is accomplished.

::The End Is The Beginning Of The End

Again I consulted the wall clock, it was ten minutes before three and I’m dead tired that I have to take a good nap. I stretched my legs and my hands then cracked my knuckles while yawning. I rested my back on the bench with my arms twisted upon my chest. I fell half asleep.

Unexpectedly, my undefined dreams were ceased. I was awaken by the sound and echo of heavy footsteps of a man who had just passed me.

My blurred vision followed the silhouette of the man then at the corner just few meters from my throne, he approached a doctor. They talked about the accident that happened few hours earlier. Thought he was one of the relatives of the girl.

“I’m sorry but your brother didn’t make it, only his fiancée survived, “I’m sorry” the doctor said while tapping the man’s shoulder consoling him. The doctor left but the man did not move for a long time. He’s still in shock just like the rest of them. I know he still can’t believe with what happened to his . . .

Wait a minute, the girl was the one who died and not the guy, not his brother. Why did the doctor gave the wrong information? Maybe he’s not the doctor who looked after the girl and her brother or maybe this man is a relative of someone in the other car. Nahh, I don’t have much energy to think.

As I’m preparing to take a nap again and pull back my unfinished dreams, the man slowly turned and slowly walked into my position. The surrounding seems shifted into a slow motion state. I remember Max Payne’s movement while he was dreaming, very slow. As the man is getting close I studied his lonely face.

I can’t be wrong, I know this guy. My brain shouted between the echoes of the man’s footstep. Echoes that occupied the whole hospital.

My body turned ice cold, shaking for a truth I do not want to know, I continued on looking at his face to recognize him. When he passed before me I noticed my softdrinks can lying on the floor. Crumpled, full of blood. I stood up quickly with fear enveloping my body then I looked and shouted to the walking agonizing man.

“Kuya! Kuya!!!” he never looked back, but I keep on trying not to notice the tears falling from my eyes. My voice was thundering into the corridor but no one could hear, then the environment slowly faded and went blurred that I can’t see anything.

I just closed my eyes for a second. Wondering why I didn’t thought ‘what in the world I’m doing here’ in the first place. As I opened my eyes, thousands of memories flashbacked into my mind. Like a moving picture flying into different direction, each revealing how the way I spent my life. I watched every single frame until the last part of my life.

I saw and remember the Sprite I bought at the graduation party of my fiancée. My Mitsubishi. The malfunctioning brakes. The accident.

Then the surrounding turns into a very bright white color. I’m not in the hospital anymore, I’m now in the abyss.

“I thought you said that you don’t want to walk with me” a voice from behind, it was the girl. She held my hand and said “Let’s go.”

Then the silence speaks.
